Kamala Harris Faces Tough Questions on Immigration in First Fox News Interview

0
Washington, D.C. — Vice President Kamala Harris, who has rarely given interviews during her presidential campaign, sat down with Bret Baier of Fox News for nearly half an hour on Wednesday. This marked her first interview with the conservative network, part of a concerted effort to revitalize her campaign as Election Day approaches and to reach out to Fox News viewers who are hesitant to vote for former President Donald Trump. A Tense Exchange on Immigration The interview began with a tense exchange on immigration, a topic that has been a focal point for many voters, particularly Republicans. Baier repeatedly interrupted Harris, pressing her for a specific number of undocumented immigrants released into the country. Harris attempted to frame immigration as a broader issue that needs comprehensive reform. BAIER: "So, your Secretary of Homeland Security said that 85% of detentions..." HARRIS: "Well, I haven't finished. I haven't finished. We have an immigration system that needs to be fixed." BAIER: "It's estimated that around 6 million people have been released into the country. Let me finish. I'll ask the question, I promise." HARRIS: "I was beginning to answer." Harris pointed out that the Biden administration offered an immigration bill as its first legislative proposal after taking office in 2021. Baier countered that the Democrat-controlled House and Senate did not consider the bill. Harris then shifted the conversation to a more recent bipartisan effort to pass new immigration legislation, which was blocked in Congress by Trump's opposition. https://youtu.be/kslqD-uIlmE?si=TwMG_wk5t_yBQ2VU Addressing Tragic Cases Baier also asked Harris if she would apologize to the families of three women, including Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, who were killed by undocumented immigrants in recent years. Harris expressed sympathy but did not offer an apology. HARRIS: "First, let me say that those are tragic cases. There's no doubt about it. And I can't imagine the pain that the families of those victims have experienced from a loss that shouldn't have happened. That's true." Harris added that if a border security bill had been passed nine months ago, there would have been more agents at the border and more support for those working tirelessly to maintain order. Baier interrupted Harris to show a video of Alexis Nungaray, whose 12-year-old daughter, Jocelyn Nungaray, was killed in Houston. The suspects, both Venezuelans, were in the country illegally. Nungaray claimed her daughter was dead because the men were not detained at the border. BAIER: "So, do you owe them an apology?" HARRIS: "I'll tell you that I'm very sorry for their loss. I sincerely am. But let's talk about what's happening right now with someone (Trump) who doesn't want to engage in solutions. Let's talk about that too, to be fair." Immigration System and Border Security Baier continued to press Harris on immigration, asking when she realized there was a problem, given her earlier statements that the border was secure. Harris acknowledged that the immigration system and the border have been broken for multiple administrations. HARRIS: "We've had a broken immigration system that transcends, by the way, the Trump administration and even before. Let's all be honest about that. I take no pride in saying this is a perfect system. I've been clear, I think we all are, that it needs to be fixed." When asked why the Border Patrol union supports Trump, Harris responded: HARRIS: "I think they're frustrated, and I understand that. They want support. And that's what that border security bill would have done. These men and women at the border are working hard, they're working tirelessly. I get it." Stance on Decriminalization of Border Crossings Despite her previous openness to decriminalizing undocumented border crossings as a presidential candidate in the 2019 Democratic primaries, Harris stated that she does not support it now. HARRIS: "I don't believe in decriminalizing border crossings, and I haven't as vice president. I won't as president." When Baier asked if this represented an evolution in her thinking, Harris pointed to her record as a prosecutor facing transnational criminal organizations. HARRIS: "I've spent a significant part of my career going after people who pose a threat to the safety of the American people, and cross our border with the intent to do us harm, and cross our border illegally. And I will continue to do that work as vice president. I take that job very seriously." Harris's interview with Fox News was a strategic move to address concerns from conservative voters and clarify her stance on immigration. As the election approaches, her campaign aims to reach a broader audience and address key issues that resonate with voters across the political spectrum.
