(CNN Spanish) – Claudia Sheinbaum will take office as the first president of Mexico on October 1 in the Chamber of Deputies. Representatives from 105 countries and 22 international organizations will attend the event, the president-elect reported this Thursday. in a statement published in X.
In the list published by Sheinbaum, 16 leaders stand out who confirmed their attendance, among them the presidents of Chile, Gabriel Boric; from Colombia, Gustavo Petro; Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel; Bolivia, Luis Alberto Arce; Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo and the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro.
First lady Jill Biden will also attend, representing the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and former president Christian Wilhelm Walter, representing Frank-Walter Steinmeier, president of Germany.
The White House announced on Wednesday the designation of a presidential delegation to attend the ceremony in Mexico City. “Dr. Jill Biden, first lady of the United States, will lead the delegation. The full list of delegation members will be announced later,” detailed in a statement.
Other leaders who confirmed their attendance are Luis Rodolfo Abinader, from the Dominican Republic; Nana Addo Dankwa, from Ghana; Santiago Peña, from Paraguay, and Mohamed Yunus Al-Menfi, from Libya.
In addition, four vice presidents, four heads of legislative bodies, 17 representatives at the ministerial level, 11 vice ministers, special envoys, 10 heads of international organizations and resident and concurrent ambassadors will be present.
In August, Russian state news agency TASS reported that President Vladimir Putin received an invitation to attend Sheinbaum’s inauguration ceremony. The president-elect’s press team told CNN that “what was done was a diplomatic notice, which is not equivalent to a formal invitation.” And he stressed that the statement is sent to all nations, not just Russia. The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs told CNN that the diplomatic notes were sent to all the countries with which it maintains relations.
The United States considered that the presence of an “autocrat” would “detract from what will be a historic event” for Mexico.
“Protests should be celebrations of democracy and peaceful transitions of power. As a sovereign nation, Mexico is the one who decides who to invite to these events. However, the presence of an autocrat, responsible for so much death and destruction, would detract from what will be a historic moment for Mexico,” a State Department spokesperson told CNN on August 7 via email.
So far, the name of no attendee representing Russia has been confirmed.
Sheinbaum will receive the presidential sash to replace Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his term will last six years, from 2024 to 2030.
