(CNN Spanish) – The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, asked the pro-government congressman Alex Paredes to withdraw his request to reconsider Tuesday’s vote in the plenary session of Congress, in which it was not approved that he leave the country to participate in the United Nations General Assembly. “I appreciate your democratic initiative but given this situation I respectfully ask you to withdraw your reconsideration,” the president said in her message to the nation.
The request made by the Executive for the president to travel to the United States did not reach the necessary votes in the plenary session on Tuesday, after 55 legislators spoke against, 50 in favor and five abstained. “Only 50 congressmen understood the importance of the Peruvian presence in this great assembly,” said Boluarte.
Faced with the result of the vote, Paredes presented a request on Tuesday to reconsider the decision and vote again.
Boluarte said that her decision to ask the parliamentarian to withdraw the request responds to the fact that she had been informed that “some of the congressmen were being influenced to vote against the authorization of the trip,” without giving further details. “For some representatives, party and personal interests are more important than the interests of our country,” she said.
On Tuesday, several congressmen supported their vote against by pointing out that Boluarte must stay in the country to monitor the situation of the forest fires that affect 22 of the 26 regions of Peru. At least 15 people died in events related to the fires according to emergency bodies.
