One of the survivors of the terrorist attack on French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo has been found dead in a Paris hotel.

The body of Simon Fieschi, who was seriously injured in the attack on January 7, 2015, was found on Thursday (17). He was the site’s webmaster at the time of the attack. The information was released this Saturday (19) by the Paris Prosecutor’s Office, which opened an investigation.

The attack on Charlie Hebdo left 12 dead, and became a symbol of intolerance against irreverent humor. The episode sparked intense debates about the limits of freedom of expression.

According to the newspaper Le Monde, investigations into the cause of death are still inconclusive. An autopsy was ordered, but yielded no results. Fieschi was 40 years old.

The Charlie Hebdo profile on the social network X published a note about Fieschi’s death.

In the post, the group says they are devastated by their friend’s death. “He spent nine months in hospital, where he was told he would never walk again. That was underestimating Simon,” the text says.

“He refused to let those who tried to destroy him win. At the trial of the January 2015 attacks, he had reported, in private, the impacts that Kalashnikov bullets had on his body, regretting that he could no longer make the gesture middle finger”, says the post.

Simon Fieschi was the first in Charlie’s newsroom to be shot while working.
