Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asserted this Sunday in his final official State of the Union address that Mexico is now experiencing “a true democracy” and has reversed “the decay” of the “neoliberal” period of the previous three decades.

“Now, fortunately, we are living in a true democracy, building a new, exalted, and fraternal homeland,” declared the president as he began his speech in Mexico City’s Zócalo, before hundreds of thousands of supporters.

López Obrador delivered his last official State of the Union address this Sunday, where he reflected on his six-year term (2018-2024) before handing over the presidential sash on October 1 to his successor, Claudia Sheinbaum, from his party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).

“Today, I present to you and the people and the nation my final State of the Union address, and I do so more convinced than ever that the best of Mexico is its people, heirs of civilizations that flourished long before the arrival of European invaders,” he expressed.

The president maintained that, thanks to the values inherited from indigenous civilizations, it explains why he was able to “relatively quickly lay the foundations to begin a new phase, which is now known and identified as the Fourth Transformation of public life in Mexico.”

“We are heirs to a grand past and an exceptional and profound history; this largely explains why it did not take us long to reverse the decay caused by neoliberal policies,” he argued.

The Mexican leader cited historical heroes such as Miguel Hidalgo, José María Morelos, Benito Juárez, Francisco I. Madero, and Lázaro Cárdenas.

With their ideals in mind, he highlighted that he presented 20 constitutional reforms on February 5 to “restore the revolutionary spirit” to the constitution and counteract 36 years of the “dreadful neoliberal period,” during which laws were made to “dispossess and surrender the nation’s assets.”

“With this ideology, we began our government nearly six years ago; the first thing we did was reform the Constitution as much as we could and promote laws to halt the anti-popular, treacherous, and corrupt policies that had been imposed and legalized by the dominance of an oligarchic power,” he stated.
