(CNN) – Almost 30 years later, Adam Sandler returns to the golf course for the sequel to “Happy Gilmore” with a new co-star, Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny, as confirmed by Netflix.

Sandler will reprise his role as the neurotic star of the famous golf comedy, alongside original characters Julie Bowen as the public relations director and Christopher McDonald, who plays his archenemy Shooter McGavin.

“Film production has begun,” Netflix reported in a note posted on their site on Tuesday. However, she did not give details of the release date or plot.

And Sandler posted an image of a T-shirt with the name “Happy Gilmore” on his Instagram account, accompanied by the message: “This is not over. The way I see it… we have only just begun.”

The multi-award-winning Latin singer, who debuted in a series in 2021 playing Arturo “Kitty” Páez in the series “Narcos” and in 2022 on the big screen with an appearance alongside Brad Pitt in “Bullet Train”, has not commented on his participation in the new film.

Sandler co-wrote “Happy Gilmore” and it became one of his most popular films. It’s about Happy Gilmore (Sandler), an aspiring hockey player with a unique personality who discovers that he is an exceptionally talented golfer with a slapshot-style swing.

He joins a golf tournament to try to win money and save his grandmother’s house, which is about to be lost. Gilmore becomes a golf legend, but her loud temper and untraditional style incur the ire of professional McGavin.

The 1996 comedy stars Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, Kevin Nealon and Carl Weathers, who died last month at age 76, along with Sandler and McDonald.

“Happy Gilmore” premiered during a fateful era for Sandler, who starred in other beloved comedy classics throughout the ’90s, including “Billy Madison,” “Big Daddy” and “The Waterboy.”

CNN’s Alli Rosenbloom contributed to this report.
