The Kansas City Chiefs have made a powerful statement about their future by securing one of the NFL’s best offensive linemen, Creed Humphrey, with a record-setting contract extension. The four-year, $72 million deal not only makes Humphrey the highest-paid center in NFL history but also solidifies his role as a key protector for star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

At just 25 years old, Humphrey has already established himself as a cornerstone of the Chiefs’ offensive line. Since being drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Humphrey has started 51 consecutive regular-season games—an impressive feat that places him among the most reliable players in the league. His outstanding performance has earned him two Pro Bowl selections and a second-team All-Pro honor in 2022.

The decision to extend Humphrey’s contract wasn’t just about the money; it was about maintaining the stability and strength of an offensive line that has been critical to the Chiefs’ success. Over the last two seasons, Humphrey allowed just four sacks, earning him the highest pass-blocking grade among centers in 2023, according to Pro Football Focus.

Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach expressed his enthusiasm for keeping Humphrey in Kansas City. “We’re extremely excited to continue Creed’s career here,” Veach said during the Chiefs’ preseason game against the Chicago Bears. “He’s been great for our organization, and we’re fortunate to have him as part of our team’s future.”

Head Coach Andy Reid echoed these sentiments, praising Humphrey’s consistency and impact on the field. “Creed’s been a heck of a football player since the day he stepped into our building,” Reid said. “He’s continued to develop and play at a high level, and we’re lucky to have him.”

Humphrey’s new contract surpasses the previous highest-paid center, Detroit Lions’ Frank Ragnow, who signed a four-year, $54 million deal. With $50 million guaranteed, the Chiefs have made it clear they see Humphrey as a vital part of their plans as they aim for continued dominance in the NFL.

As the Chiefs gear up for the 2024 season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, they can rest easy knowing their offensive line is anchored by one of the league’s best. Humphrey’s leadership and skills will be crucial as Kansas City sets its sights on another Super Bowl run. With this deal, the Chiefs have ensured that their offensive line will remain one of the most formidable units in the league for years to come.
