(CNN) – This Saturday, German authorities attempted to restore traffic following a technical problem, but some traffic has since resumed.
Train services in central Germany have been “hugely affected” due to a technical fault, German rail company Deutsche Bahn said.
In the Frankfurt metropolitan area, numerous train cancellations occurred due to a failure in radio communications, according to the Tagesschau news service of the public broadcaster ARD.
According to Tagesschau, trains traveling to or from Frankfurt were affected and traffic through the important financial and travel center was stopped.
Hundreds of passengers were stranded at Frankfurt central station on Saturday, not knowing when they will be able to resume their journeys, Tagesschau reported.
The Rhine-Main Regional Transport Association (RMV), one of Germany’s largest transport associations, said in a social media post on Saturday that due to a technical failure in radio communications, “train services in the RMV area have been suspended until further notice” and that neither the S-Bahn trains nor the regional trains could operate.
“At the moment the duration of the interruption cannot be predicted,” RMV stated at the time.
It is still unclear what caused the technical failure.
This Saturday, Deutsche Bahn reported that the technical problem had been solved. “Rail traffic in central Germany is resuming. There may be interruptions until the end of the day,” he indicated.
Frankfurt is one of the most important European transport hubs, with around 1,200 local and long-distance trains in regular service each day, according to Tagesschau.
