The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, Jose Manuel Albareshas requested information from the Venezuelan authorities “official and verified” about the arrest of the two Spanish tourists; has also requested a “clarification of charges” of which they are accused.
Sources from the Ministry have assured this Monday that the Spanish Embassy in Venezuela is in contact with the chancellery, to which it has informed that it will exercise diplomatic and consular protection of its nationals and keep the families of the detainees informed in a timely manner.
The Minister of the Interior of Venezuela, Diosdado Hairannounced on Saturday that two citizens of Spain were detained, José María Basua Baldovinos and Andrés Martínez Adasmewhom he accused of having “links with the Spanish National Intelligence Center” and with figures close to the Venezuelan opposition who were preparing “a plan to assassinate” the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, according to Diosdado Cabello.
Diosdado Cabello, considered by Washington lleader of the Soles drug cartel, accused the CIA and the CNI of participating in an operation joint effort to assassinate Maduro. «The detainees even talk about an operation with mercenaries, of bringing them to Venezuela, with very clear objectives of assassinating President Nicolás Maduro. “They have contacted French mercenaries, mercenaries from Eastern Europe and they are in an operation to try to attack our country,” said Nicolás Maduro’s number 2.
The Government of Spain did not take long to deny that both detainees in Venezuela belong to the Spanish Intelligence services and detailed that the Embassy sent a verbal note to the Maduro Government “asking for access to detainees”.
The relatives of the detainees, natives of Bilbao, filed a complaint with the Ertzaintza to report their disappearance on September 9. As confirmed by the Basque Department of Security, the relatives were alerted to the situation generated by the Basque Police who took steps and were able to confirm that both were detained in Venezuela, a circumstance of which the families were informed.
