(CNN Spanish) – The Chamber of Deputies of Mexico approved this Thursday the opinion that reforms various articles of the Constitution, where the assignment of the National Guard to the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) is proposed.

With 362 votes in favor, zero abstentions and 133 votes against, the plenary session generally approved the project after more than five hours of discussions. The details of the minute must still be debated in this chamber and subsequently sent to the Senate for analysis and vote.

Reform of the National Guard is already being discussed in the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico

The initiative was sent by the Federal Executive to the Congress of the Union on February 5, along with twenty constitutional reforms.

In May 2019, Mexico established the National Guard as its main public security institution, under the civilian control of the Ministry of Public Security and Citizen Protection. Since its creation, this institution has been pointed out by some human rights defense organizations for operating in an increasingly militarized manner and for the fact that a large number of its members come from the Army or the Navy.
