The Department of Education and Universities will assume the management of the new school of Son Gibertwhich will be added to the public network. It was announced this Monday by the minister of the sector, Antoni Vera, at the ceremony of laying the first stone of the first cycle of early childhood education center in this neighborhood of Palma.

The works of this first cycle early childhood education center have a budget 2.7 million euros, of which the Department of Education and Universities contributes 1.15 million euros.

The future nursery school will have three units divided between two classrooms with 14 places for first grade (babies 0 years old); two more for the second year of kindergarten, with 24 places (children aged 1 and 2), and three classrooms for the third year of children (2-3 years), with 54 places. There will also be a support classroom. In total this school will have a capacity of 92 places.

Also present at the event were the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez; the general director of Early Childhood, Attention to Diversity and Educational Improvement, Neus Rieraand the Councilor for Education of the Palma City Council, Lourdes Rock.

Martínez recalled that the construction of the Son Gibert school had been planned since 2019 and after repeated announcements of its delay, the current government team has worked to make it a reality “responding to years of multiple demands from the educational community and the neighbors”.

This project represents, in the words of the mayor of Palma, “a great step to increase the educational offer of Palma, meeting the educational needs of the neighborhoods.”

The first mayor has advanced during the act that, in these 15 months of legislature, the construction of the Son Dameto children’s center, between Sevilla and Castilla La Mancha streets, has also been promoted, with another 92 more places, which in total represents 184 more places for the network of municipally owned centers.

“We have a clear commitment from the first moment to improve the network of municipal schools so that they are at the level that the families and citizens of Palma deserve,” he added.

The mayor recalled, on the other hand, the 100 percent bonus for 0-3 years education in the 29 schools in Palma, a fact for which he thanked the Government, which offers a four-hour bonus, “for its willingness to look towards Palma and the needs of its citizens.
