These days the Real Club Náutico de Palma hosts the Sandberg Estates J/70 Worlds (J/70 class World Championship) with the participation of a hundred boats from 25 countries. One of the people who is collaborating in the success of this test is the Mallorcan sailor Juan CompanyCEO of J2 Sailing and representative in the Balearic Islands of JBoats, the shipyard that created this one-design boat. Your company offers service to boats competing in the Bay of Palma.
The J70 class is very established worldwide, there are more than 1,900 ships delivered and has experienced very rapid growth in just a decade. In Spain it has a very large fleet in both Vigo and Barcelona and Juan Company expects that from now on it will also have strong demand in Mallorca.
J2 Sailing wants, for this, organize a stable fleet on the island with its own and exclusive regattas. To do this, it has the four boats that have already been delivered to owners in Mallorca and a group of shipowners from northern Europe who would like to have their boat in the Balearic Islands to be able to sail here. “The idea is to promote a winter regatta circuit in Mallorca and we are talking to clubs and marinas that could host it. We hope to be able to make a league of about 10 boats and we will also invite those who sail in Barcelona,” says Company. To promote this idea, the Mallorcan company has acquired and assembled its own J70, with which it will participate in the competitions.
The CEO of J2 Sailing highlights that one of the strong points of the J/70 monotype is its ease of transportation and storage. “There is nothing on the market that is so easy and fast to move. The keel can be removed from the boat and it can be dismasted very quickly.. Then you can take it on a trailer and it barely leaves the van,” he points out.
Another advantage of this class is the combination within the fleet of professional and amateur crews (Corinthian Class). “They have different classifications, but they compete together in the same regattas, so for amateur athletes the learning curve with these boats is exponential,” highlights Company.
The person in charge of J2 Sailing has been very busy this year 2024 with the project of provide sailing vessels to the Navy. The island company was the winner of the competition called by the Ministry of Defense to incorporate eight sailboats of its J/99 model to the fleet of its Naval Military School in Marín (Pontevedra). At the moment They have already delivered four units, three are in Marín and another in Palma. All of them, baptized with the name Regulus and numbered in order of launch, are competing in regattas and forecasts indicate that the four remaining boats will be at the disposal of the Navy so that its cadets can be trained before the end of the year.
“The J/99 is a suitable model as a training boat and, due to its versatility, it defends its racing rating very well in both ORC and IRC. It is a functional boat, sure to provide the best performance“, says Company, which highlights the importance of the support of JBoats: “It is a very recognized brand in the sector. “They have always been distinguished by the quality of the product and its easy maintenance.”
The latest creation of this American yacht building company is a 40-foot (12-meter) high-performance cruiser that is nominated for boat of the year and that J2 Sailing will present next month in Mallorca to carry out sea trials.
