On July 16, 2024, a major update titled “Project Lupara” will be released for The Outlast Trials, as announced by PlayStation earlier today. This update introduces new content, including a villain, map, game mode, and more, aiming to enhance the survival horror experience.

Introducing Franco Barbi

The new villain, Franco Barbi, is the highlight of this update. Franco is a deranged mobster from New Orleans, armed with a sawed-off shotgun. He represents the first gun-wielding adversary in the Outlast series. Players will encounter him on a new map called “The Docks,” where he manufactures drugs and terrorizes his victims. Franco’s character is driven by greed, violence, and insecurities, making him a formidable and unsettling opponent.

New Content and Features

Project Lupara brings several new elements to The Outlast Trials:

  1. New Map – The Docks: Players will navigate through this new environment, solving puzzles and avoiding Franco’s deadly tantrums.
  2. New Game Mode – Escalation Therapy: This rogue-lite mode challenges players to survive a series of randomized trials until they face permadeath. Success depends on collecting upgrades and surviving as long as possible.
  3. New Player Ability – The Barricade: This ability allows players to block paths and gain precious time to complete objectives.
  4. New Trials and MK-Challenges: The update includes several new trials, such as “Poison the Medicine” and “Mansion Escape,” each offering unique challenges and storylines.

Gameplay Enhancements

In addition to new content, the update introduces various improvements:

  • Difficulty Options: Players can now choose from four difficulty settings: Introductory, Standard, Intense, and Psychosurgery.
  • Matchmaking and UI Overhauls: The update aims to streamline the gameplay experience with better matchmaking and user interface improvements.
  • Daily and Weekly Tasks: These tasks offer additional challenges and rewards, encouraging players to engage with the game regularly.

A Growing Success

Since its release, The Outlast Trials has sold over 2 million copies, solidifying its place in the survival horror genre. Project Lupara is the first major update, with more planned to keep the game fresh and engaging for its growing player base.
