(CNN Spanish) – The director in charge of the Litoral Penitentiary, María Daniela Icaza, died this Thursday in an armed attack while she was driving to her home in a vehicle, the Ecuadorian Service for Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI) confirmed to CNN.
In a statement, it added that one official was injured.
The Litoral Penitentiary, or Men’s Social Rehabilitation Center No. 1 of Guayaquil, is considered the most dangerous prison in the country, from where organized crime groups have caused several massacres and riots in recent years.
The National Police Indian that its personnel went to the place to begin preliminary investigation work.
CNN asked the Ministry of the Interior if the official had police protection or security escorts and if she had a risk report on Icaza, and is awaiting a response.
