Harris in Michigan: Middle East war must finally end

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has sought the support of Muslim and Arab voters in the state of Michigan. “I know this year has been very difficult given the immense scale of death and destruction in Gaza and the civilian casualties and displacement in Lebanon,” Harris said at a campaign rally in Oakland County.

The killing of Hamas leader Jahia Sinwar must be a turning point in the conflict, emphasized the Democrat and, with a view to the ceasefire negotiations, said: “Everyone must use this opportunity to finally end the war in Gaza and bring the hostages home and end the suffering once and for all.” Diplomacy is therefore also “the key to creating long-term stability on the Israeli-Lebanese border.”

As incumbent Vice President, Harris faces the challenge, particularly in Michigan, of defending the Middle East policy of the US government under President Joe Biden, which includes extensive military support for Israel. On the other hand, she wants to win over Muslim and Arab voters. The swing state of Michigan is home to many US citizens with roots in Lebanon, the Palestinian territories and other countries in the region.
