(CNN Spanish) – The American soldier who crossed the border from South Korea into North Korea last year was sentenced Friday to a year of confinement and dishonorable discharge after pleading guilty to charges of desertion and assault.

Private Travis King pleaded guilty at a court-martial at Fort Bliss, Texas, to one count of desertion, one count of assault on a noncommissioned officer and three counts of disobedience to a superior officer, according to a statement from the Office of Counsel. US Army Special

King was also demoted to the rank of E1, the lowest enlistment rank. The time King spent in confinement after his arrest will be counted as part of his sentence, the Army said.
